Overview

Electric’s Site Reliability Engineering team is seeking a Sr. Site Reliability Engineer to help maintain a reliable and scalable SaaS system. This role actively seeks to implement observability best practices as well as use automation to improve cloud resource utilization, while balancing security best practices. Reporting to the SRE Engineering Manager, this role will focus on enabling our Engineering teams to be self-service and get a batteries-included approach to common patterns. The ideal candidate will drive complex, cloud-based solutions on AWS and use their coding skills to automate Terraform as well as automate procedures in Python. Their cloud expertise is an asset to be that subject matter expert in the room for all things AWS.

What you’ll do

  • Build fast, scalable, robust, resilient infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Evangelize the underlying philosophy of SRE and DevOps to all your peers
  • Analyze new product initiatives and provide an expert opinion for cloud-native solutions.
  • Actively identify, manage, and optimize cloud infrastructure costs.
  • Be the cloud security advocate, working closely with our security team to implement and continually improve day-to-day security practices.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, triage events, and drive down toil to reduce alerts.

Who you are

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of software development experience in a DevOps and infrastructure setting, supporting production systems.
  • Works across teams effectively, able to build a strong bridge between SRE and our product and engineering partners. Listens to product features and needs and can actively participate, get discreet requirements, and offer a practical solution to the challenge. Acts as the voice of SRE and offers well-architectured patterns and guidance for any unproven technical solutions.
  • Have built production-scale systems in a public cloud like AWS.
  • Practices Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - both codifying and automation but as well as composing, automating, and testing infrastructure code.
  • Believes that quality informs speed - able to drive quality improvements and incrementally improve accuracy with each change.
  • Driven by an automation-first mindset - manual changes are the exception, not the rule!
  • Builds fault-resilient systems - designs solutions which are tolerant to failures at multiple layers, including network, application, public cloud, etc.
  • Works well both in new designs and can support existing production workloads.
  • Can think like an attacker, but implement strong security to prevent those attacks.
  • Data-driven decision maker - enjoys creating the data to validate outcomes and inform future decisions.

Preferred Technical Skills

  • AWS services, including: EKS, S3, VPC Networking, RDS, API Gateway, Lambda, IAM, and DynamoDB.
  • Design and support container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes and Amazon ECS.
  • Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Serverless Framework.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, and Elasticsearch.
  • Competency in programming languages such as python, go, bash (we primarily use python).
  • CI/CD concepts and tooling (CircleCI, Jenkins, etc.)
  • Familiarity with advanced workflow systems such as Temporal.

This role is 100% remote. Members of this team are in an on-call rotation with one week of primary on-call duties including Slack support as well as handling alerts from our monitoring systems. The majority of on-call duties happen during the standard work-day with after-hours issues being rare.
